Botanist, Wetland Specialist

Ms. Ballard has worked at BIO-WEST as a botanist and wetland specialist for one year. She has fourteen years of experience and is skilled in research, design, and implementation of vegetative mapping strategies to study ecological succession, including use of GPS and GIS technologies. Her knowledge of sampling methodologies for vegetative studies covers a wide range. She conducts baseline vegetation, wetland delineation, riparian and stream inventories, monitoring studies and designs. She identifies, documents, and curates floral species and plant communities. She is a Ph.D. Candidate in Forest Ecology at Utah State University, and she holds an M.S. in Fisheries and Wildlife Science and a B.S. in Biology, both from Utah State University.

  • Experienced in plant species identification, documentation, and the taxonomic relationships of floral families, genera and species represented in UT, CO, NV, ID, southcentral AK, western MT, and eastern WA

  • Experienced in conducting surveys of Threatened, Rare, Endangered and other sensitive floral species, identifying habitat types, common plant assemblages, and their associated substrates of UT, ID, and NV, and noxious weeds of UT, NV, CO and ID

  • Proficient in professional technical writing, written and photographic documentation, and reviewing, editing, and synthesizing information from a variety of sources

  • Proficient in conducting wetland delineations based upon the Corps of Engineers 1987 Manual and the Interim Regional Supplement to the 1987 manual for the Arid West Region (December 2006); holds Wetland Delineation Certification (2002 and 2007)

  • Knowledgeable of the federal National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) process and experienced in writing NEPA documents and mitigation measures

  • Knowledgeable in planning, design and implementation of vegetation resource mitigation and restoration in the Intermountain West in a variety of habitats

  • PADI-certified open water advanced scuba diver

  • Certified in ESRI ArcView GIS and ArcGIS programs, 2000 and 2006
