BIO-WEST, Inc. is seeking a highly motivated and passionate ecologist with a strong background in Geographical Information Systems (GIS), spatial analysis, and map making. This is a full-time position that will consist of approximately 60% fieldwork and 40% office work. Specific experience with GIS is mandatory while ecological experience with Texas freshwater mussels, fishes, coastal birds, vegetation and/or endangered species is additionally preferred. This position will involve conducting endangered species surveys, fish/mussel relocations, applied research, and population monitoring primarily related to Texas fauna and flora. The successful applicant should be well-versed in all project phases including proposal preparation, study design, field data collection, data analysis, GIS and report preparation. Although fieldwork will be focused within Texas, there is potential for occasional work throughout the south and intermountain west.
Preferred Qualifications: Master of Science in Ecology, Aquatic Biology, Wildlife and Fisheries Science, Environmental Science, or related field. Expertise with conducting spatial analysis and producing figures/maps in ArcGIS. Strong problem solving, GIS, experimental design and technical writing skills are paramount to this position. Knowledge of sampling techniques and identification of common freshwater mussels, fishes, coastal birds and endangered species is a plus. Knowledge of operating and maintaining small boats, kayaks, outboard motors, and SCUBA certification are also advantages but not formally required.
Working Conditions and Physical Demands: Must be comfortable wading, snorkeling, diving, and boating in Texas streams, rivers, lakes, and bays that experience a wide range of conditions. Must be willing to work irregular hours on occasion, including weekends and evenings, in remote locations in inclement weather. This position will require travel to remote areas to conduct field work for several days at a time. Must have ability to work as part of a team with team members of varying backgrounds and skill levels.
Location: This position will be stationed in the BIO-WEST San Marcos, Texas office.
Salary: $55,000 – $75,000 annually to start is anticipated, but actual pay will be commensurate with experience, skills, education, and training.
