Sediment Island Removal and Revegetation
BIO-WEST assisted with removal of a sediment island from the Old Channel on the Comal River to enhance fountain darter (Etheostoma fonticola) habitat. BIO-WEST provided all environmental assistance before and during removal, as well as restoration after removal. This included completing an assessment for the removal of the in-channel sediment island and stands of giant cane (Arundo donax), preparing a plan for revegetating targeted in-stream areas, and removing all nonnative aquatic vegetation from areas within 2 meters of the island.
In addition, BIO-WEST biologists removed fountain darters from the project area before construction activities began each day. Following island removal, BIO-WEST revegetated the project area with native aquatic vegetation important to fountain darter using plants from the Old Channel and Landa Lake. Revegetation activities were completed within 1 month from sediment island removal.
