The Fairmont Park Community Fishing Pond, one of BIO-WEST’s recently completed projects, won a Merit Award from the 2020 Annual Professional Awards Program, hosted by the Utah Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA).
Christopher Sands, a principal of BIO-WEST and senior landscape architect, accepted the award on behalf of the project team, which was a collaboration between BIO-WEST, Salt Lake City’s Parks and Public Lands Program, and the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources.
Fairmont Park Community Fishing Pond was entered in the general design category which recognizes “site-specific constructed works of landscape architecture where physical design, functional success, and aesthetic quality were the primary considerations,” according to ASLA’s website.
The urban fishery and habitat restoration project involved the restoration of three spring-fed stream channels and the creation of a deep-water pond that can over-winter fish in the historic Fairmont Park within Salt Lake City’s Sugarhouse neighborhood. Located within approximately two acres of developed park space on the eastern side of the park, the project features a curved elevated boardwalk trail over created wetlands, a cantilevered fishing pier over the pond, shoreline fishing access areas, and native riparian and upland plantings.
ASLA Arizona Awards Jury commented on the project, saying the project stood out among the competition for its “Extensive partnerships and collaborations. Great example of elevating a basic project to community value and habitat restoration, including wetlands and riparian environments.”
BIO-WEST was heavily involved in every aspect of the project from concept to completion. Work tasks included conducting site inventory and analyses, developing the design concept, preparing construction documents, and performing construction administration services.
